After Your Wedding

Changing Your Name After Marriage

A step-by-step guide to updating your name on all your important documents.

If you've decided to change your name after marriage, you'll need to update it across various organisations. The good news is that your official marriage certificate makes this process straightforward. Here's everything you need to know.

You Need Your Official Marriage Certificate

The certificate you receive on your wedding day (Form 15) is not accepted for name changes. You'll need to order an official certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages after your marriage is registered. This typically takes 2-4 weeks.

Your Name Change Options

When you get married, you have several options:

Take your spouse's surname

The most common choice - change your surname to match your partner's.

Keep your own name

No paperwork needed - simply continue using your birth name.

Hyphenate both names

Combine both surnames with a hyphen (e.g., Smith-Jones).

Both change to a new name

Both partners can change their surname (may require separate deed poll).

Tips for a Smooth Process

1. Get multiple certified copies

Some organisations require an original certificate. Get multiple copies of your certificate certified by a JP - this lets you update multiple places at once without ordering extra certificates.

2. Start with your licence and passport

Update your primary ID first - other organisations often need to see updated photo ID.

3. Make a list and track your progress

It can take several weeks to update everything. Keep a checklist so nothing falls through the cracks.

4. Consider travel timing

If you're travelling soon after your wedding, make sure your ticket name matches your passport exactly. Some couples prefer to keep their maiden name for travel and change their name after returning.
